Rachel Reeves (born 13 February 1979) is a British Labour Party politician and economist who has served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer since July 2024. She represents the Leeds West and Pudsey constituency in Parliament, having been elected in 2010 .
Reeves studied PPE at the University of Oxford and earned a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics. Before entering politics, she worked at the Bank of England and in the private sector .
As Chancellor, she introduced a fiscal strategy called “securonomics”, focusing on infrastructure investment, education, and labour supply, while rejecting tax cuts and deregulation. Her policies are inspired by U.S. President Joe Biden’s economic approach .
Reeves is the first woman to hold the office of Chancellor in the UK’s history .
