Description
Mohammad Javad Bahonar (5 September 1933 – 30 August 1981) was an Iranian Shia cleric and politician who briefly served as the Prime Minister of Iran in 1981.
Born in Kerman, Iran, Bahonar was the second of nine children in a modest family. He began his education at a traditional Maktab Khaneh (parochial school) and later pursued religious studies in Qom, where he became a disciple of Ayatollah Khomeini.
Bahonar was an active participant in the Iranian Revolution, advocating for Islamic principles and opposing the Shah’s regime. After the revolution, he played a significant role in shaping the new Islamic Republic’s policies.
In August 1981, Bahonar was appointed Prime Minister by President Mohammad Ali Rajai. Tragically, on 30 August 1981, both Bahonar and Rajai were assassinated in a bombing orchestrated by the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK).
Bahonar’s legacy is commemorated in Iran, including the Shahid Bahonar Stadium in Kerman.
