Mehdi Karroubi Biography (born September 26, 1937, in Aligudarz, Iran) is a prominent Iranian Shia cleric and reformist politician known for his advocacy of democratic reforms and human rights within Iran. He served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament from 1989 to 1992 and again from 2000 to 2004. Karroubi was a presidential candidate in the 2005 and 2009 elections, where he emerged as a leading figure in the Green Movement, challenging the legitimacy of the 2009 election results. In February 2011, following the government’s violent crackdown on protesters, Karroubi was placed under house arrest without trial, a measure that remained in effect for over a decade. Despite his confinement, he continued to advocate for political reform and accountability. In March 2025, after 14 years under house arrest, Karroubi was released, marking a significant development in Iran’s political landscape.
