John Lewis (1940–2020) was an American civil rights leader and politician who served as a U.S. Congressman from Georgia from 1987 until his death. A key figure in the civil rights movement, he was one of the “Big Six” leaders who organized the 1963 March on Washington and led the Selma to Montgomery marches, advocating for voting rights and racial equality. Lewis dedicated his life to social justice, nonviolent activism, and public service. As a congressman, he worked tirelessly to promote civil rights, education, and human dignity, earning widespread respect as a moral and political leader.
