Description

Irina Slavina (1973–2020) was a Russian journalist, editor, and activist known for her independent reporting and criticism of the Russian government. She founded and served as editor-in-chief of Koza Press, an independent news outlet in Nizhny Novgorod that published uncensored content on politics, corruption, and local issues. Despite facing fines, searches, and continuous pressure from authorities, she remained committed to press freedom and truth-telling. On October 2, 2020, after years of harassment, Slavina tragically died by self-immolation near the Interior Ministry office in Nizhny Novgorod, leaving a powerful statement on the challenges faced by independent journalists in Russia.
