Fumimaro Konoe Biography

(1891–1945) was a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan three times, most notably from 1937 to 1939 and again in 1940–1941. Coming from a noble family, he played a central role in Japan’s politics during the years leading up to World War II.

Konoe initially sought to avoid war with Western powers but eventually oversaw Japan’s increasing militarization and expansion in Asia. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, facing possible war crime charges, he committed suicide. He remains a controversial figure in Japanese history.
