Ebrahim Raisi Biography (born December 14, 1960 – died May 19, 2024) was an Iranian cleric and politician who served as the President of Iran from 2021 until his death in 2024. Born in Mashhad into a clerical family, Raisi embarked on religious studies at the age of 15 in Qom, Iran’s foremost center of Shi’a scholarship. By 1981, he began his career in the judiciary, quickly ascending through the ranks to become Tehran’s Chief Prosecutor by 1989. He gained notoriety for his role in the 1988 mass executions of political prisoners, earning the moniker “Butcher of Tehran.” of Iran’s judiciary, a position he held until his election as president in 2021. His presidency was marked by a hardline approach to domestic and foreign policy, including a firm response to the 2022 protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. Raisi was also known for his close alignment with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19, 2024, near Uzi, Iran, at the age of 63. His death led to a period of political uncertainty, with Mohammad Mokhber appointed as acting president and a new presidential election scheduled for June 28, 2024.
