Boris Yeltsin Biography (1931–2007) was a Russian politician who became the first President of the Russian Federation, serving from 1991 to 1999. Originally a Communist Party official, he rose to prominence in the late 1980s as a reformist leader who opposed Soviet hardliners.
Yeltsin played a key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union and introduced major political and economic reforms to move Russia toward democracy and a market economy. His presidency was marked by economic hardship, corruption, and political struggles, but also by greater political freedoms. In 1999, he resigned, naming Vladimir Putin as his successor.
