Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, and Founding Father who served as the 3rd President of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He is the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and a key advocate for democracy, individual rights, and republican government. Jefferson also served as Vice President under John Adams and as Secretary of State under George Washington.
