Shirley Chisholm (1924–2005) was an American politician, educator, and author who became the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968, representing New York’s 12th Congressional District. A member of the Democratic Party, she championed civil rights, women’s rights, and social justice throughout her career. In 1972, Chisholm became the first African-American woman to run for a major party’s presidential nomination. Known for her courage, advocacy, and trailblazing role in politics, she inspired generations of women and minorities to pursue leadership and public service.
