Harry S. Truman (1884–1972) was an American politician who served as the 33rd President of the United States from 1945 to 1953. He became president after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt during the final months of World War II. Truman made critical decisions, including authorizing the use of atomic bombs on Japan and leading the postwar reconstruction of Europe through the Marshall Plan. His presidency also oversaw the beginning of the Cold War, the founding of NATO, and the Korean War.
