Description
Mohammad Ali Rajai (15 June 1933 – 30 August 1981) was an Iranian politician who served as the second president of Iran from 2 to 30 August 1981. Prior to his presidency, Rajai held the position of prime minister under Abolhassan Banisadr and concurrently served as the minister of foreign affairs from 11 March 1981 to 15 August 1981.
Born in Qazvin, Iran, Rajai came from a modest background and pursued education in Tehran, eventually becoming a mathematics teacher. He was an active member of the Islamic Republican Party and played a significant role in the political landscape of post-revolutionary Iran.
Rajai’s presidency was tragically short-lived. On 30 August 1981, he was assassinated in a bombing at the Prime Minister’s office in Tehran, along with Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar and several other officials. The attack was attributed to the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a group opposed to the Islamic Republic.
Despite his brief time in office, Rajai is remembered for his dedication to the revolutionary ideals of the Islamic Republic and his commitment to public service.
